Soul vs Should

03/19/2020

This self quarantine we’re all going through offered me an opportunity for continued growth tonight.

As I went to reach for my ukulele to practice, and clear and calm my mind with it’s meditative focus, my husband was keeping busy with household projects.

As my body and soul felt strongly that this is what I needed in this moment, my mind went to ‘I should be doing something busy too. What should I do? What should I accomplish?’

However, that is actually how picking up the ukulele initially came to be. Feeling his energy earlier, I wandered around to find my ‘project’ to tackle for the night.

When I saw my forgotten ukulele, my soul lit up. It brought me peace.

After a pause to get nourishment, and a call back to it’s song, my mind once again chimed in that I would not be seen as enough if I too didn’t complete some tasks.

Yet, this whole pause the world is on, I believe is a moment for a deeper inner reflection and connection. To truly stop and take stock. To reexamine. To simply breathe and be.

My old story was putting myself last and doing what I thought other’s expected.

My transformation was one of changing that trajectory.

Life presents moments to choose it again and again.

As I say, this crazy little ride called life is short. These days, it truly feels crazier as well as the reality of it’s shortness.

In the words of Mary Oliver, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

Honor the inner callings of your soul, don’t ‘should’ them away.

On that note, I’m off to play my ukulele. There will be time to complete the tasks, when they present themselves.

Stay healthy!
