Accepting Help

11/18/2020

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been one of those people who tries to do everything myself.

Either I don’t want to burden someone else, don’t want to “wait” for someone else (hello impatience!), want to be sure it’s done the way I want (umm, control freak anyone?), or am trying to save money (which usually ends up costing me more).

We all have our own unique strengths, gifts and talents- our “Zone of Genius” as stated by Gay Hendricks in his book The Big Leap.

Therefore, when I took on a lifelong dream project of becoming a published author, I knew it was time to accept help.

I love writing! I could sit and write all day.

Now, punctuation and grammar, that is a whole other story! They are not my strong suits. I’ll even omit punctuation in many of my poems.

Having a book without these elements does not lead to a great user experience. Therefore, I gratefully accepted the help of an editor.

Ahh, the peace that brings to have another assist in our weak areas. Not only peace, but greater confidence, as someone else’s genius has filled the gap in mine.

Next I came to design. While I first tried to understand the layout, I found myself overwhelmed and frustrated.

Therefore, it was time to enlist the help of a designer.

I cannot tell you how much relief this brought. Not only did I get to relax and enjoy the process, everything was done more beautifully than I could have done or imagined.

Every journey we take grants us valuable lessons. My book journey taught me that it is time to focus on my own zone of genius and allow others to live in theirs.

Not only did I receive so much support, I connected with amazing souls.

We are all in this journey called life, together. Where one is weak, one is strong. We can all offer a hand to help lift each other higher, and to have a heck of a lot more fun without so much struggle.

So I ask you, where can you accept help? What can you request support with?

And- where can you offer help? What is your unique zone of genius?

I’d love to hear your insights! Hit reply and let me know what inspired you.

Wishing you a beautiful day, in your “zone of genius,” supported by others in theirs.
